4.1 Step 1 – Identify Your Need
4.1.1 Identify Green Features and Operational Practices
Performing a strategic evaluation of the school’s environmental initiatives and
aspirations is the first step to green procurement. Such initiatives/aspirations
could be included when considering: replacing aged air conditioning units or
lighting systems, improving existing operational practices, and/or installing
renewable energy systems, such as PV panels or wind turbines.
A dedicated property manager or employee in charge of building operation shall
be appointed to evaluate the existing conditions specific to GHG emissions,
carbon content, energy intensity, ecological footprint, operational practices,
student participation in past environmental activities etc. and formulate school’s
environmental aspirations.
4.1.2 Draft School Green Master Plan
Based on the building conditions, staff resources,
financial resources, and the evaluation exercise
previously conducted, a green master plan would be
outlined. The green master plan can help the school
community (students, teachers, staff, parents, etc.)
understand how schools can go green. It is important
to set clear and realistic targets when deciding to go
green.
