3. Green School Guide - 3.6 Greenhouse Gas (GHG) Emissions
Hong Kong Green School Guide
134
Scope 2
This Guide suggests several green features and methods of efficient operation
to reduce consumption of electricity and gas, and hence GHG emissions. These
green features include:
Reduce
Green Features & Efficient Operation
Electricity
used in Air
Conditioning
• Reduce heat to the school building and hence the demand
for air conditioning by incorporating external shading, natural
ventilation design, green roof, vertical greening, heat shield roof
coating, window film, double pane window, blinds & curtains,
energy efficient low heat emission lighting, etc.
• Achieve desired thermal comfort while also reducing energy
consumption of air conditioning systems. For example, using
ceiling / wall mounted fans to assist distribution of cool air,
selecting energy efficient air conditioning system, etc.
Electricity used
in Lighting
• Increase access to daylight and hence reduce reliance on
artificial lighting by carefully design window orientation and
size during development of new school; properly design the
lighting system to meet the minimum lighting requirement (i.e.
avoid over lit); incorporating solar tubes and/or solar light pipes
to bring in more daylight into the buildings; etc.
Electricity / Gas
used in Water
Heating
• Select energy efficient ways to heat water, such as using heat
pump water heaters and incorporating solar hot water systems.
Electricity
generated on
Site
• Generate renewable electricity on site to supplement traditional
electricy, by incorporating wind turbine, photovoltaic (PV)
panel, etc.
Electricity used
in Others
• Select equipment / appliance with high energy efficiency such
as energy efficiency labelled appliances, incorporating energy
efficient lift system in new schools, or when retrofitting existing
lifts, etc.
Scope 3
This Guide has suggested several green features and methods to reduce water
consumption, sewage discharge and waste and hence indirectly lessen GHG
emissions.
These include:
• Select water fixture that is water efficiency labelled under the Water Efficiency
Labelling Scheme managed by Water Supplies Department;
• Inspecting pipes and plumbing system regularly for leaks can prevent water
wastage;
• Before printing a document, carefully proofread it;
