3. Green School Guide - 3.5 Indoor Environmental Quality
Hong Kong Green School Guide

• The following measures can be implemented in new school development to
improve thermal comfort (sorted by priority):
- - Incorporate climate positive design described in various sections in this
Guide (e.g. building orientation, natural ventilation, shading, glass type,
etc.);
- - Increase air ventilation with the help of ceiling / wall mounted fans;
- - Select high energy efficient air conditioning with sufficient cooling capacity
as described in Air Conditioning Unit section in this Guide; and
- - Climate positive and active design (fan and air conditioning) shall be
evaluated together as these designs can impact not only the thermal
comfort of occupants, but also daylight access, natural ventilation, heat
gain and capacity of air conditioning. Please consult Authorised Person
(AP), Registered Professional Engineer (RPE) in Building Services
Discipline and BEAM Professional for detailed evaluation.
• Existing schools can implement the following measures to improve thermal
comfort (sorted by priority):
- - Relaxed dress code for staff and provision of flexible options for students
to choose summer / winter school uniform between seasons;
- - Increase air ventilation with the help of ceiling / wall mounted fans, also
help decrease the demand for air conditioning; and
- - Incorporate climate positive design described in various sections in this
Guide (e.g. internal shading, window film, double pane glass, etc.).

e. Suggestion
Indoor temperature and relative humidity provided below for respective functional
areas are considered to be comfortable for most occupants in summer, and
hence can act as a reference for schools adjusting the air conditioning during
hot season:

With the help of ceiling / wall mounted fans and/or natural ventilation through
opening windows when ambient environment is appropriate (i.e. sufficient
wind and low ambient noise), higher temperature and relative humidity can be
