Many green building rating systems for school buildings worldwide adopt a
similar framework in evaluating the environment at school buildings, covering
the following aspects:
• Site selection
• Materials aspects
• Energy use
• Water use
A similar framework is thus adopted in this Guide.
1.5 Structure of the Guide
The following sections are included in the Guide:
• Section 3 provides essential knowledge and understanding of green school
building concepts based on the Essential Aspects for Green Schools.
Benefits, opportunities, potential constraints, school models, cost information
and references are provided for each green initiative.
• Section 4 is a step-by-step guide of green procurement which aims to help
schools to identify the key issues and steps to take to go green.
• Section 5 provides ideas, resources and key issues regarding operations,
maintenance and building monitoring.
• Appendices include contacts of building professionals and contractors,
sources of funding applicable to school, international case studies, list of
schools in Hong Kong pledged BEAM / BEAM Plus, and cost information for
some of the green features provided in the Guide.
