School Integrated with the Environment
United Christian College (Kowloon East)
The extension project at United Christian College (Kowloon East) is
designed to meet the needs for dormitory, canteen, chapel, gymnasium,
activity rooms, basketball court, indoor swimming pool and outdoor
spaces.
Challenged with designing in a small and triangular site area and avoiding
view obstruction to the existing main school building nearby, the building
designer came up with a unique green design approach that utilised
natural ventilation and daylight access.
After extensive study of the sun projection and air flow formed by the local
landscape, a new slim tower similar in height to the existing main school
building, and consisting of an atrium space and a cluster of low-rise blocks
between the new and existing buildings was established.
This distinctive building form promotes natural ventilation throughout the
entire complex, minimising the need for air conditioning and mechanical
ventilation. Landscaping and sunshade fins were integrated into the
building to reduce solar heat gain from the south-west façade, while also
making use of daylight access for illumination of the indoor space.
This extension project demonstrates the benefits of environmental
integration.
