Developing Environmental Themes for Schools
Nan You Primary School in China
TheNanYou Primary School inNanshanDistrict of Shenzhen inGuangdong
Province is a good example of how using a special theme can help guide
the greening of a school campus and create buzz among students and
teachers.
In the early 2000s, the school chose “Marine Education” as a special
theme guiding the school’s green initiatives and environmental education
development.
Since then a number of green initiatives have been introduced, including a
green plaza consisting of a variety of trees, a large fish tank, sculptures of
different marine organisms, and marine cultural corridors. The school also
added plants on the grounds and rooftop, which now cover about 86% of
the total school area.
Focusing on a green learning environment has inspired students to learn
independently through guidance and teachers’ encouragement.
