1.2 Benefits of Green Schools
Green schools provide a positive learning environment both inside and outside
the classroom, like improvements in thermal comfort, lighting, acoustics and
indoor air quality and a pleasant school environment offers a wide range of
benefits to students and teachers as well as society at large.
The benefits of green schools are manifold. The following areas are considered
the most significant.
1.2.1 School and Student Enhancements
Green and energy efficient school buildings provide schools a great opportunity
to enhance the learning environment for students and the overall environment
of the school.
Enhancement of School Environment
Green schools provide benefits including, but not limited to:
• Enhanced academic achievement;
• Higher teacher retention;
• Better health of students and staff, hence fewer sick days;
• Higher productivity

• Increased competitiveness of the school.
Enhancement of School Reputation
Green schools are a source of pride for students, both in their school and their
individual accomplishments.
The National Foundation for Education Research in the UK conducted a survey

in 2008 focused on students’ attitudes towards green schools. According to
survey results students reported:
• 34% increase in school pride; and
• 11% increase in overall enjoyment of their school experience.
Moreover, schools going green may foster a better public image for the schools
and help gain wider recognition in the community.
