3.1 Green School Sites
Concepts and Principles
One of the fundamental elements for a green school is the site aspect, which
emphasises ecological values and integration with the surrounding environment.
Newport High School in Wales of U.K. is the first
secondary school certified to Excellent rating
under BREEAM (U.K. green building assessment
system).
The school adopted passive solar design during the
building development. Classrooms are orientated
in such a way to maximise access of daylight by
allowing entry of the morning sun in winter and
to minimise solar heat gain by shading from the
afternoon sun in summer.
Passive solar design necessitates higher cost than
systems implemented in conventional building
design. However, energy savings generated by
less use of air conditioning and lighting result in
lowered greenhouse gas emissions and cost
savings. Passive solar design also provides a
comfortable learning environment.
