3.1.1 School Site Selection
Applies to NS

Benefits
• A location in proximity to local amenities and public transport can reduce
travel needs and reliance on private vehicles;
• Reduce air pollution, energy use, and traffic noise by discouraging the use of
private vehicles or taxis by building users; and
• A location with low environmental concerns (e.g. traffic noise, poor air
quality) can reduce the need for remedial measures (e.g. air conditioning,
mechanical ventilation).
Issues to Consider
a. Opportunities
• Sponsoring bodies or school decision makers can consider applying for site /
school premises that are in proximity to public transport, local amenities and
recreational facilities. This can reduce travel time and costs, provide access
to living needs and improve quality of life for teachers and students; and
• Site selection criteria for New Schools Development:
- - Public transport (MTR, bus station, minibus station, etc.);
- - Basic amenities (post office, clinic, supermarket, etc.);
- - Recreational facilities (sports ground, swimming pool, football pitch, etc.);
and
- - Climate positive design (such as limited shading and wind blockage from
surrounding buildings for daylight access and natural ventilation).
b. Constraints
• Availability of suitable site; and
• A site with high environmental concern whether in its surrounding (e.g. traffic
noise) or within the site (e.g. ecological landscape, historical and landscape
value) will require careful assessment, planning and design.
