1.1.2 Hong Kong Schools to Go Green
Key Facts
Alleviating the environmental impact of school can contribute to the community
and improve the learning environment for the future leaders of our society.
Certain figures are quoted as follows for consideration.
• 780,000 people, equivalent to around 10% of Hong Kong’s population, are
students.
• Students spend an average of 35 to 40 hours a week in a school facility.
Apart from home, students spend most of their time at school.
• Hong Kong has about 1,200 primary and secondary schools, which account
for around 2-3% of the total building stock in Hong Kong.
Nurturing Ground
Green schools provide a platform to address environmental issues such as
energy efficiency, water conservation and stewardship of the environment, as
well as a nurturing ground for students to:
• Practice making their schools healthier,
more sustainable and pleasant;
• Access real world data and information
about renewable energy generation and
consumption;
• Learn to live a more sustainable life;
• Inspire others in the community to think
more about our relationship with nature,
and how one can make the world a more
sustainable place to live; and
• Demonstrate to the school community and
the wider community in Hong Kong the
benefits of going green.
