Hong Kong Green Building Council
Message from Secretary for the
Environment
As says in the Confucian Analects, “Is it not
pleasant to learn with a constant perseverance
and application?”, it is a delight to be able to
acquire and apply new knowledge. The green
school development is a contemporary example
of these words of wisdom from Confucius. A green
school itself and the process provide an invaluable
opportunity for students to apply the green building
concepts and knowledge in real life.
I am glad to see the growing number of schools
embarking on green school projects. Schools
are seedbeds for innovation and future leaders.
Effective environmental education should not
be confined to classroom learning. Seizing the
opportunities of green school projects, schools
can engage students and teachers in the process
so that they will not only enjoy a healthy campus in
the end, but also be allowed to put what they learn
into practice, thereby reinforcing the concept of
what green building should be and its significance
in the context of sustainable development. As
such, students will be nurtured to become the
future environmental leaders and are better
equipped to combat the climate change.
I wish to express my appreciation to HKGBC for
its relentless effort in promoting green buildings to
the public. Adopting a life cycle concept, the Hong
Kong Green School Guide has provided practical
guidance on green school design, construction,
operation and maintenance. The Guide also
carries an important message that it is people that
matters and the purpose of green building shall not
focus only on the application of technologies. An
exemplary green building design should be able to
inspire the inhabitants and shape their behaviours
towards a sustainable lifestyle.
