Benefits
• The provision of energy metering encourages students and teachers to
monitor their school energy usage, and how their behavioural changes and
weather conditions can impact on energy consumption;
• With the provision of energy meters for different systems, the energy usage
and strength of individual system can be identified; and
• Provide indication of actual energy performance and energy reduction after
implementation of green initiatives.
Issues to Consider
a. Opportunities
• Energy meter can be installed to monitor energy usage in different systems.
b. Constraints
• If the existing electrical circuit is not separated to cater for different types of
building services installation, it might be difficult to adopt an energy meter to
monitor the energy use of individual building services installation.
c. Solutions
• Schools can choose among the following three meter types according to
their needs and budget:
Meter Type
Technical Issues
Cost
Socket meter
• Easiest to use;
• Does not require electrician; and
• Can only measure equipment that
plugs into the socket.
Low
Wireless Meter
• Easy to install;
• Requires electrician – Registered
Electrical Contractor & Registered
Electrical Worker – Appendix B (4);
and
• Can measure a group of equipment
that shares the same cable.
