3.4 Water Use
Concepts and Principles
Water conservation is one of the major focuses of green schools. There are
three categories for water conservation in schools.
Water Efficient Fixtures
Adoption of Water Supplies Department Grade 1 water efficient label on sanitary
fixtures such as water taps and urinals, dual flush water closet, etc.
Water Recycling
Adoption of water recycling, such as rainwater harvesting and grey water
recycling to contribute positively to the reduction of water consumption for non-
essential use (e.g. irrigation, floor cleaning).
Water Monitoring
Another major component of water conservation is to monitor and manage
water demand by using water and/or smart metering. Apart from checking the
sanitary water efficiency, student participation in monitoring their behaviour on
water usage is also encouraged.
Incorporating Rainwater System into School Life
North Spring Primary School in Singapore
North Spring Primary School promotes proactive learning through the use
of green features. One of the green strategies is to incorporate the idea of
rainwater collection into the study of science as well as arts.
The school states that, through the rainwater collection system, “Pupils
learn to appreciate the rhythmic sound created by rainwater as it gushes
down the pipes and forms ripples in the pond. The wind vane standing
majestically atop the classroom block provides another avenue in the
learning of science as it turns around in various directions.”
