3. Green School Guide - 3.3 Energy Saving
Hong Kong Green Building Council
107
Benefits
• Reduce unnecessary water heating; and
• Reduce unnecessary water evaporation and hence water usage.
Issues to Consider
a. Opportunities
• The suggested measures can be implemented to reduce energy used for
heating water in swimming pools.
b. Solutions
• Climate positive measures should be implemented first:
- - Avoid heated swimming pools as they consume significant amounts of
energy;
- - Lower the set temperature of water;
- - For new developments, consider adopting natural ventilation design for
indoor swimming pool in order to minimise air conditioning and mechanical
ventilation requirement;
- - Consider using thermal blanket or pool cover to reduce heat loss and
water evaporation to the atmosphere, hence saving energy and water.
Useful References (1) & (2) provide more information; and
- - An additional benefit of providing a cover is to prevent pollutants from
falling into the water when not in use. This can improve hygiene, save
chemicals and reduce filtration.
• Active measures should only be considered after the above-mentioned
measures are implemented:
- - Instead of conventional electrical / gas water heater, consider using heat
pump water heater or in-combination with solar hot water system to heat
up swimming pool water. Please refer to the sections of heat pump water
heater and solar hot water heater in this Guide for more information.
