Designs that can enable behaviour change
• A significant portion of the objectives
will be achieved through behaviour
change. Professionals must learn to
design in a way that facilitates this
change in behaviour. This includes the
natural ventilation and solar protection
design discussed in the section on
building controls, and also many other
factors such as lighting, glare, and
adaptive comfort.
Enabling behaviour change through
public education
• The exemplary design and performance
of new buildings capture the imagination
of both professionals and the public. An
exciting new building serves as a beacon
for demonstrating innovative design
practices, new technology, and best-
practice behaviour. Therefore, we must
encourage such exemplary performance
and capture their demonstration and
education value, such as:
• Pilot projects
• Green tours
The recent Construction Industry Council project on Zero Carbon Building can be regarded as a
breakthrough for green building industry in Hong Kong. The provision of guided tours enable visitors
to understand the basic principles of environmental conservations in green buildings, as well as the
benefits offered by green buildings. Similar tours are available at the Education Path of the EMSD
Headquarters.
