- - Select glass and window film with high value of visible light transmittance
(VLT) (i.e. tinted window shall be avoided as it blocks out large percentage
of visible light);
- - Shallow room geometry allows deeper daylight penetration into the
internal zone;
- - Light colour wall / ceiling (e.g. white) can further assist daylight penetration
into the internal zone; and
- - Design measures above shall be evaluated together as these designs can
impact not only on daylight but also thermal comfort of occupant, natural
ventilation, heat gain and capacity of air conditioning. Please consult
Authorised Person (AP) and BEAM Professional for detailed evaluation.
• Computer simulation (such as daylight simulation software) can be utilised to
assess the daylight access based on the building design and local conditions
before construction of new school
• Overall Thermal Transfer Value (OTTV) set by the Buildings Department
provides framework for building professionals to design window opening and
façade materials within the set limit while fulfilling the daylight and ventilation
requirements; and
• For existing buildings, schools can implement the following measures to
improve the access of daylight (sorted by priority):
- - Select glass and window film with high value of visible light transmittance
(i.e. tinted window shall be avoided as it blocks out large percentage of
visible light);
- - Light colour wall / ceiling (e.g. white) can further assist daylight penetration
into the internal zone; and
- - Similar to design measures for new school developments, the impact on
thermal comfort and heat gain shall be evaluated together with window
and film design. Please consult Authorised Person (AP) and BEAM
Professional for detailed evaluation.
