3.1.3 External Shading Device
Applies to NS
Benefits
• Reduce heat gain hitting
building facade, hence
lower air conditioning
energy; and
• Improve thermal comfort
for occupants near the
window area.
Issues to Consider
a. Opportunities
• External shading device can be installed on campus walls to reduce radiant
heat gain.
b. Constraints
• The practicality of reinforced concrete (RC) frame or metal frame due to the
structural loading and building regulation compliance; and
• Projection from building may be
challenged to comply with current
building regulation.
c. Solutions
• There are many types of external
shading devices, where windows
facing different directions shall
adopt different shading devices;
• Shading type, structural loading,
futuremaintenanceprovisions and
building regulations compliance
shall be managed by Authorised
Person (AP) and Registered
Structural Engineer (RSE); and
• Consider using lightweight metal frame (such as aluminium instead of steel
and/or perforated metal sheet) to construct external shading for low structural
load.
