5.2.4 Smart Metering
Key Points
• Smart meter is a meter that
can measure consumption
(and electricity generation for
renewable energy system) of
electricity, gas and water, and
can transmit real time data to
a central system (e.g. a PC, a
display unit or even hand held
devices via web) for energy and
water monitoring;
• The provision of smart meter encourages students and teachers to monitor
their school energy and water consumption;
• When smart meter is found to be cost-effective for installation, schools should
commit registered electrical contractor/worker or Water Supplies Department
for the installation work such as modification of the existing plumbing to suit
the new meter, etc.; and
• Where installation of smart metering is neither practical nor cost-effective,
schools are encouraged to monitor the consumption behaviour by noting and
recording the readings of the electric and water meters on a regular basis.
