3.2.5 Meal Portioning at Schools

Benefits
• Reduce pressure on landfill sites and preserve food resources by promoting
on-site meal portioning; and
• Promotes positive behavioural change and education for staff and students
in the following areas: healthy eating, reducing food waste and avoidance of
disposable containers and cutlery.
Issues to Consider
a. Opportunities
• Schools can adopt on site meal portioning by installing catering equipment,
furniture and installation of canteen on school premises.
b. Constraints
• Adequate space for canteen and kitchen use.
c. Solutions
• Adopt one of the programmes funded by Environment and Conservation
Fund (ECF) to help schools adopt on-site meal portioning in order to reduce
food waste and disposable lunch boxes;
• The ECF subsidises schools to install the necessary equipment and
conversion works; and
• Useful References (1) to (3) provide information on food suppliers, reusable
trays, containers, cutlery and ECF funded items such as kitchen equipments,
washing facilities, conversion and installation works for canteen, kitchen and
furniture.
