3.2.1 Sustainable Timber and Forest Product
Benefits
• Encourage sustainable forestry practices
by seeking timber products from well-
managed forests that are harvested in a
sustainable manner; and
• By purchasing timber from sustainable
sources, threats to indigenous species
and clearance of vegetation that would
help regulate the amount of CO
2
in the
atmosphere are reduced.
Issues to Consider & Implementation
Applies to NS & ES
a. Opportunities
• Sustainable forestry practices can be promoted by purchasing timber and
forest products from sustainable sources.
b. Constraints
• Some timber products, such as door and timber flooring, are difficult to
source from accredited sources, such as Forest Stewardship Council (FSC),
the American Forest and Paper Association (AFPA), etc.
c. Solutions
• Forest Stewardship Council (FSC) accredited paper products (such as A4
printing paper, toilet paper) can now be easily sourced; and
• For timber products required, such as construction materials, during
development of new schools, and retrofit of existing schools, and need of
paper supply (e.g. school annual report), sustainable timber requirements
may be included in tender documents to request contractors to purchase and
use timber or paper from accredited sources.
Cost Information
School can contact paper and timber suppliers for costs and options.
