3.2.6 Recycled and Upcycled Furniture

Benefits
• By donating used furniture schools can
reduce pressure on landfill sites and
preserve non-renewable resources;
• Buying or acquiring used / reconditioned /
upcycled furniture helps schools save on
costs and promote recycling; and
• Promotion of positive behavioural
changes and education for staff and
students.
Issues to Consider
a. Opportunities
• Schools can promote waste reduction practices by reusing furniture, donating
used furniture, acquiring/purchasing upcycled furniture and/or making
furniture using waste materials in school.
b. Constraints
• Limited availability of used furniture/ locations to donate used furniture;
• Organisations that offer or accept used furniture might not provide logistics
arrangements; and
• Limited technical capability and/or resources for conducting workshops
within school on creation of upcycled furniture.
