3.2.2 Recycled Materials

Benefits
• Promote the use of recycled materials in order to reduce the consumption of
virgin resources; and
• Virgin resources are limited and may generate significant CO
2
emissions
during the sourcing/harvesting/mining processes.
Issues to Consider
a. Opportunities
• Sustainable practices can be promoted by purchasing products that are
made of recycled materials.
b. Solutions
• Select materials and equipment that contain recycled content. Examples that
are applicable to schools include the following:
- - Rubber mulch for playground surfacing comprised of recycled scrap tires;
- - Playground equipment, site furnishings, seats and outdoor tables that
contain recycled plastic from waste, such as bottles;
- - Recycled paper pencil; and
- - Useful References (1) & (2) provide further information regarding products
with recycled content.
