• Building Maintenance Guidebook – Section 4.1.3 by Buildings Department
of Hong Kong provides details of water seepage testing and solution. Please
refer to Useful References (7) & (8);
• Engage a Landscape Architect and/or Landscape Contractor to assess the
methods of irrigation. Refer to Water Efficient Irrigation section in this Guide
for more information;
• Engage a Landscape Architect to advise on the depth and eventual weight of
the growth medium, which is primarily determined by the selection of plants
and the overall design concept. As such, the optimal depth of growth medium
shall be used for the intended vegetations, avoiding excessive weight on the
roof;
• Licensed Plumber to assess roof’s water pressure, water supply point and
drainage;
• Adopt automatic irrigation system to minimise labour requirements. Please
refer to Water Efficient Irrigation section for more information; and
• Authorised Person (AP) and Registered Structural Engineer (RSE) shall
be consulted for aspects related to the structural loading capacity of roof,
alterations and addition works to the existing building structure to support the
green roof if required, Barrier Free Access, safety advices, means of escape
in roof area, etc.
