Q1 What is the meaning of the HK 3030 logo?
A1

This hand gesture means 2030, 30% and “ok”. In the middle of hand, it represents electricity consumption. From HK3030 logo, we can know our target is to reduce 30% of the electricity consumption used in buildings in 2030 as compared to 2005 level in Hong Kong. The HK3030 campaign will be an achievable and successful energy saving campaign for buildings in Hong Kong.

Q2 The Government has already proposed a target of 50% - 60% carbon intensity reduction by 2020 compared with 2005 in its consultation paper in 2010. What is this HK3030 Campaign different from the former target?
A2

The proposal from the Government mainly relies on the supply side solution (i.e. change of energy mix) and carbon intensity will be affected by increase in GDP in Hong Kong.

During the past decade, the GDP of Hong Kong has increased at a rate of almost 50%, while the electricity consumption increased only at around 2%. It reflected that the carbon emission of a service-driven economy like Hong Kong may not be directly related to its GDP growth.

Therefore, HKGBC would like to propose an alternative solution by tackling the demand side management of electricity consumption in buildings.

Q3 How to achieve “the reduction target 30% of the electricity used in building in 2030 as compared to 2005 level in HK3030 campaign”?
A3

The reduction scenario has been taken into 2 major factors. It is to be estimated that 48% of the reduction target could be made possible through technology advancement and uptake. The commercial building and residential building is shared that of 48% reduction target. And the remaining 12% reduction is to be achieved by behavourial change.

Q4 Why does HK3030 Campaign focus on buildings?
A4

In 2009, buildings consume over 91% of total electricity consumption in Hong Kong and it equivalents to around 62% of the total carbon emission in Hong Kong. Therefore, in order to tackle with the climate change issue in Hong Kong, electricity consumption in buildings should first be addressed.

Q5 What is the purpose of collecting electricity usage data?
A5

The electricity consumption data is provided by CLP Power HK Ltd. and Hong Kong Electric Company, Limited. The data is useful to develop a benchmarking tool in Hong Kong. HKGBC thinks it is towards launching a meaningful benchmarking system from the start of HK3030 Campaign. We believe the benchmarking tool will deliver increasingly meaningful value as it captures more electricity usage data over time.
