In 2009, liberal studies was made one of
the four compulsory subjects in the New
Senior Secondary Curriculum introduced in
Hong Kong schools, with the first batch of
candidates sitting public exams in 2012.
Under the new curriculum, one of the
modules is called ‘Energy Technology and
the Environment‘. Students are required
to evaluate issues concerning energy
technology and the environment from a
variety of perspectives, informed by scientific, ECF has supported over 4,300 projects with
technological, environmental, historical,
social and cultural data. By learning about the
positive impact of science and technology on
our lives, students will understand the need
for sustainable development and the role of
global citizenship.
School buildings and campuses are also
equipped with green technologies and
features. Together with green practices,
they serve as a comprehensive learning
experience to encourage future environmental
stewardship.

OUTSTANDING PROGRAMMES
ORGANISED BY SCHOOLS
The Environment and Conservation Fund
(ECF) was established in 1994 to provide
funding support for educational, research
and other projects and activities in relation Green Building Council, a prestigious global
to environmental and conservation matters.
Through subsidising projects and activities
initiated by eligible local non-profit-making first-ever campus built in a high-density urban
organisations, the ECF seeks to promote
behavioural and lifestyle changes for
environmental protection and sustainable
development. Since its establishment, the
grants totalling over HK$1,900 million.
Between 1994 and 2012, the ECF has
received six funding injections from the
Government totalling HK$1,735 million. As
a long-term commitment towards
environmental protection and conservation,
the ECF received a capital injection of
HK$5,000 million in 2013, so that investment
returns from the fund can provide long-term
and sustained support for community green
actions.
With the support of the ECF, schools can
enhance students’ environmental awareness
and knowledge by linking up the
demonstration of environmental facilities
with relevant environmental education
activities.
Case Study:
The story of Sing Yin Secondary
School
Sing Yin Secondary School was awarded the
‘Greenest School on Earth 2013’ by the U.S.
award that aims to showcase a school’s
commitment to sustainability. It is the
area to win the award. This reflects Hong
Kong’s international position as a pioneer in
sustainable buildings.
The new campus of Sing Yin Secondary
School was built in 2008 with funding
support from the Architectural Services
Department to introduce energy-saving and
emissions-reducing facilities, including an
automatic weather station, solar panels
and wind turbines, lighting system and
energy-saving elevators. In addition to
the hardware installed in the school,
environmental education was embedded
inthe school curriculum by encouraging
the students to explore and think about the
importance of environmental protection.
Teachers and students worked together
to create a green campus to achieve
sustainability, while at the same time
significantly reducing energy consumption and
