Regeneration of 146 Chung On Street
While the surrounding urban fabric along Chung On Street is un-
dergoing rapid urban renewal, a substantial portion of its aging
community is still longing for enhanced vocational and clinical
services. Caritas – Hong Kong has commissioned the Architect
to “bring a new life” to a 45 years old dilapidating dormitory and
nursery to fulfill the community needs.
We took an alternative rejuvenation approach by injecting fresh
energy into the aging urban fabric.
The façade is considered as a multi-layered skin, integrating the
preserved heritage (granite facing, balconies, French windows,
verandahs) and the new elements with the streetscape.
Extensive green elements have been introduced. The aban-
doned roof has been turned into roof gardens with renewable
energy sources like wind generated lighting and solar panel hot
water for the clinic.
Adjustable full height timber louvers are employed as sun shad-
ing and security control along the preserved balconies. Double
glazing provides noise abatement control against road traffic.
Old fence walls are taken down, service lanes and backyards
are turned into gardens, courtyard foyers and forecourts, extend-
ing onto the sidewalk for the pedestrians. In echo with the newly
introduced Highways Vegetation Acoustic Barrier, a new perfo-
rated green fence and a green fragmental façade treatment bring
in new identities to the old fabric.
活化眾安街146號
香港明愛服務荃灣區已超過半世紀，眼見該區的急速市區重
建，並未能為全部老區居民帶來渴求已久的教育及醫療服務。
故委任本事務所為一幢45年殘舊不堪的幼兒園進行「新生工
程」，以期服務坊眾。
我們以市區活化的手法來為這古舊的3層建築物注入新生命。
現存在的騎樓、花岡地牛石、大趟門及簷篷都一一保留並與新
的外牆設計融合成街景的一部份。我們又注入大量的綠化環保
元素，把荒廢的天台轉化為綠茵天台，並加入風力發電及太陽
能熱水供應。全層高的木百頁，成為向西騎樓的檔陽板，又兼
作防盜檔。雙層中空玻璃更發揮了隔熱隔聲的效用。我們又把
舊圍網拆改，把後巷及天井活化成入口花園，更利用新的透風
綠色圍牆及外牆的「綠比例」設計來與街景融和；並與新的綠
化隔音屏取得相得益彰的整體效果；居民對此都讚不絕口！
