“It took us approximately one year just to create a well-structured
initial plan that had been thoroughly discussed with
stakeholders, before we officially launched it to the public,”
Conrad explains. “HK3030 is all about a fundamental
behavioural change to ensure a greener world for
future generations. I cannot think of a reason why
anyone would say no to this idea, but I know it
will take time to convince people. I believe it is
our duty to play a part in the betterment of our
planet. We are all in this together. As a human
race we have no one to turn to but ourselves.
This should not be a vision held merely
by environmental advocates and green
groups. Industry professionals are the real
solution to the problem. We are the ones
with the professional know-how to address
the issue.
“We could not have pursued such a
campaign 20 years ago simply because
the necessary technologies and know-how
were not available. Now we are on the edge
of an overhanging cliff and we cannot delay
action any longer, as we are doing more and
more irreversible damage to the Earth.”
In recognition of the importance of this issue, it has
become commonplace for the people of Hong Kong
to demand a cleaner and greener place to live. Conrad
believes that this drive for a higher quality of life is one of
the city’s most powerful tools.
“When talking about green building development, for the time
being, I would give Hong Kong a score of B,” he says. “We have made
certain progress, but nowhere near sufficient. We should always aim to be the
vanguard in terms of building a green and sustainable environment. We need to be an
A** city. With this mentality in place, I see Hong Kong being a role model for
other Asian countries, and even the world, if we can get
our act together and implement our visions successfully.”
The Ever Humble Thinker and Doer
When asked how he would describe himself, Conrad’s
reply is simple. “I am a very blessed person. I am just an
ordinary man, but God has granted me so many
blessings, really far beyond my imagination. He
not only guides me through times of turmoil, but
also provides many angels to help me pursue my
dreams. For example, I have met so many talented
people through the HKGBC, all of whom are so
passionate about green building and are striving
to create a better world for all of us. I have learnt a
great deal from them. Being the chairman of the
HKGBC is nothing but a wonderful experience. It
has been a truly remarkable journey.”
