Benefits
• Reduce energy consumption with energy efficient air conditioning units while
achieving desired thermal comfort; and
• Reduce damage to ozone layer and global warming impacts by selecting air
conditioning units that use environmentally friendly refrigerant.
Issues to Consider
a. Opportunities
• Schools can achieve thermal comfort for occupants while reducing
environmental impacts by selecting energy efficient air conditioning units that
use environmentally friendly refrigerant.
b. Constraints
• Variable Refrigerant Flow (VRF) type is not yet rated under the EMSD energy
labelling scheme; and
• The use of air conditioning systems that are not aligned with the school’s
environmental policy (such as air conditioning only for room temperature
above 25ºC and 80% relative humidity).
c. Solutions
• Schools may choose air conditioning units according to their needs and
budget. Three major types of air conditioning units used by schools in Hong
Kong are: window type, split type and Variable Refrigerant Flow (VRF).
