The theme, ‘Nature’, was selected by the Board of Directors of
the YMCA of Hong Kong. Driving as a central part in the design
outcome, regional rocks, stone, natural flora and images of
ecological sites around nearby countryside are brought in. Together
with a piece of granite stone selected in Fushan for its oxidized rusty
tone sett the colour palette of the Hostel. The Architect together
with Y-representatives sharing the same spirit, were taken at dawn
to various natural sites at Sai Kung and Tung Ping Chau, to shoot
sunrise photographs of coastline village houses, mountain vegetation
and coastlines forming the body of artwork to grace the space.
For the café, the theme, ‘Villages’, was adopted. Walls are clad in
granite slabs with cleft finish to lend a rough, natural yet chic aspect.
Accessories follow the theme: village bowls, rice wine jugs, old
Chinese glass herb bottles, etc. together with rattan partitions and
solid wood tabletops. The totality is warm and welcoming. Rusty
steel combines with recycled timber savaged from old timber door
forming the ceiling suggest a low-carbon undertone.
To recall Hong Kong’s east-meets-west history, a mixture of furniture
pieces from both hemispheres was use. On the atrium wall, a
contemporary expression of the Geo-park composed of natural
granite, recycled timber, galas and metal making a strong, textured
statement, was installed. Daylight is captured into the atrium through
a complex, high-tech low-e glazed skylight that filters UV and
minimizes heat gain. Adjacent to a new access to the MTR is a rock
landscape, with different pebbles and seasheels that carry through
the colour tones of the South China Sea.

of operations for the Y. More importantly, is the cohesiveness of the
design itself towards nature and the very atmosphere the users can
enjoy.
